In football, there’s nothing worse than having a hole in your defence.

The success of a team hinges on a solid defensive foundation.

Edmonton’s football foundation in general will become a little stronger this season with the addition of a new bantam football club.

CDMFA Tiers the 2008 season
Saturday, 22 March 2008 07:52

The Capital District Minor Football Association (CDMFA) has decided to introduce tiering all divisions for the 2008 season. This comes in response to a request by Football Alberta to reduce the many one sided games and line up with the provincial system. Explosive growth in football registration makes tiering an option that was not practical a few years ago. Five years ago there were only 30 CDMFA teams. This year the league is looking at 80 teams. A wide gap between more and less experienced teams creates lop sided games, and can also be a safety issue.

In past years teams were tiered at the end of the season for playoffs based on the regular season record. The top eight teams were grouped in a playoff division and competed for the Tier 1 and 2 championship. The remaining teams vied for Tier 3/4 or consolation round.

This year for Bantams and Peewees, there will be a similar split but it will happen at the beginning of the season rather than the end. A preseason seeding tournament will be held in late July or early August to help determine the relative strength of teams. At that point all teams are place in one of two divisions and will play only within their division. After three weeks of play, the division split will be reviewed and adjustments made if necessary. There will be no preseason tournament for the Atoms, as they will declare what tier they believe appropriate for their team.

Football Alberta has implemented Bantam and Peewee provincials in all four tiers. Previous years had no provincial tier 4 champion. There is no provincial Atom division, the CDMFA playoff winners are also the provincial champion.
